Understanding Driver License Points
Virginia's Traffic Offense Points System
Have you received a speeding ticket? Were you pulled over for running a red light or a stop sign? Were you charged with Reckless Driving? Were you ticketed for another moving violation? In Virginia, traffic violations such as these result in points being added to your driver's license. Accruing 12 or more points can lead to driver's license suspension.
Points added to your driver's license are dependent on the seriousness of the moving traffic violation. For instance, Reckless Driving and drunk driving add 6 points to your license, while failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign is less. Although these points don't stay on your license forever, they can still significantly affect your privileges, and in some cases your employability, if you have a commercial driver's license.
Even a minor speeding ticket can lead to driver's license suspension if you have previous traffic offenses. Attorney Kenneth C. Chrisman, of Richmond, Virginia, has more than 25 years of legal experience. He has handled thousands of traffic violation cases, helping clients defend and restore their privilege to drive.
When representing your case, I negotiate with the police and prosecutors to obtain a fair and reasonable disposition of the offense. We do not attack the officer's credibility or try to challenge truthful evidence. We want to make things better for you, not push the other side against you. Out-of-State Clients
If you were ticketed for Reckless Driving or another violation while visiting in Virginia, you will still get points on your license. However, the points depend on your home state's laws, not the laws of Virginia.
Forty five of the 50 states belong to the Interstate Compact, which requires them to share information about driving records and past offenses. Virginia is one such state. Your ticket information will be sent to your home state. If Virginia suspends your license, your state is under contractual obligation to also suspend your license. However, this does not always occur.
